The building was the seat of the Inquisition tribunal in Cartagena. Since 1953 it has housed the Museo Histórico de Cartagena de Indias, known as MUHCA.
The ground floor explains how the Inquisition worked in the city. The other rooms cover the founding of Cartagena, the colonial period and independence.
The stone doorway on the Plaza de Bolívar is one of the most photographed in the old town. Inside there are courtyards with trees where you can rest from the heat.
