Work on the cathedral began in the 16th century. It was still under construction when the pirate Francis Drake attacked the city in 1586 and damaged it with his cannons, and it was finished in the early 17th century.
The outside is plain, with stone and light-colored walls. The tower, with its painted dome, is more recent and is the one that shows up in almost every photo of the old town's streets.
Inside there are stone arches, a wooden ceiling and a gilded altar. It's a working church: there are masses, and tourist visits happen outside of them.
