San Alberto is a coffee brand from Buenavista, Quindío, with several shops it calls temples. The Cartagena one is on a corner of the Plaza de Santo Domingo, a few steps from Botero's Gertrudis.

Beyond the usual tinto (black coffee) or cappuccino, the point is the brewing methods at the top of the menu and the tastings: they set out three coffees, explain where each one comes from, and you smell them before tasting. Some experiences pair coffee with honey or rum, and they change with the season.

Inside there's air conditioning, which you'll appreciate in the old town at midday. The shop sells bags of coffee, syrups and gear to brew at home.

What to see

  • Guided coffee tastings.
  • Shop with bags of coffee to take home.
  • The Plaza de Santo Domingo from the window.

Getting there

  • On foot from anywhere in the walled city; it's on the Plaza de Santo Domingo.
  • From the Torre del Reloj it's about a 5-minute walk.

Tips

  • Order one of the special brewing methods instead of a regular coffee: that's what you come for.
  • Ask which experiences are on that week; they change often and some workshops need a minimum group size.
  • If you don't have time for the tasting, the shop is good for picking up coffee as a gift.
