Pedro Claver was born in Catalonia in 1580, came to Cartagena as a Jesuit and devoted his life to caring for the enslaved Africans arriving at the port. He died here in 1654 and was declared a saint in 1888. His remains are on the main altar.
The church was built between 1580 and 1654 and faces the Plaza de la Aduana. Next to it is the cloister, home to the museum with collections of religious art and Afro-Colombian history.
Under a 1985 law, September 9, Saint Peter Claver's day, is Colombia's national human rights day.
