The museum opened in 1979 in two port warehouses: one from the 17th century, where masts and sails were stored, and another from the late 19th century. The ceilings are more than twelve meters high.
It was championed by painters Enrique Grau and Alejandro Obregón, and today it bears Grau's name. The collection brings together 20th-century Latin American painting and sculpture, with a focus on artists from Colombia's Caribbean.
From the second floor you can step out onto the Baluarte de San Ignacio, on the wall.
