Juan Manuel Barrientos opened El Cielo in Medellín in 2007, when he was 23. From there came the restaurants the group has today in Bogotá, Miami, Washington and New York; the Miami and Washington ones have a Michelin star. The Medellín house is in Astorga, El Poblado, at Calle 7D #43C-36.
You come for the tasting menu. The Experience is the long one, with about 18 courses, and costs COP 700,000 per person. The Journey is the short version, 12 courses, at COP 550,000. Both start from Colombian ingredients and add moments that aren't eaten: a hot towel when you arrive, a dish called the tree of life, a chocolate therapy for your hands and a candle at the end.
Wine pairing is ordered separately: COP 330,000 for four glasses or COP 460,000 for six. If you don't want the full menu, El Cielo Bistró runs in the same place, with an à la carte menu. It's open every day, public holidays included, for lunch and dinner.
