It's the original gate of the walled city. It's also called Boca del Puente (bridge mouth), because there was a drawbridge here over the old San Anastasio channel, which connected the old town with Getsemaní. In an attack, the bridge was raised.

The clock that gives it its name was installed in the early 18th century. The work is attributed to military engineer Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor.

Once through the gate you reach the Plaza de los Coches, and from there streets lead to the Plaza de la Aduana and San Pedro Claver.
