Heading north out of the walled city, Avenida Santander runs along the sea through El Cabrero, Marbella and Crespo. These are the beaches where Cartagena locals swim, a few minutes from the old town.

They don't have the water of Barú or the islands: it's open sea, with waves and stone breakwaters every so often. On weekdays they're quiet; on weekends they fill up with families.

Cartagena's fire department recommends swimming in the designated areas, with lifeguards, and away from the breakwaters, where holes and currents form. After heavy rain it's best not to go in, because of the runoff from the city.

Tips

  • Don't swim next to the breakwaters.
