Construction on Cristo Rey began in 1949 and it was unveiled on October 25, 1953. It's 26 meters tall: 21 for the figure and 5 for the pedestal. It was made by Italian sculptor Alideo Tazzioli and stands at about 1,440 meters, in the rural district of Los Andes.
From the top you can see almost the whole city, from downtown to the south. There are food stands near the monument, which close half an hour before the park does.
Today the monument is part of Ecoparque Cristo Rey, run by Dagma (the city's environmental agency). After the August 2026 earthquake the park was inspected, and since August 22 the monument area (section 5) and the trail that starts next to the Universidad del Valle San Fernando campus (section 2) have been open again. Section 3, which connects to the Cristales neighborhood, is still closed while some walkways are repaired.
