It opened on December 28, 1957, as the Plaza de Toros de Cañaveralejo. Engineer Guillermo González Zuleta designed its structure: the concrete stands are cantilevered, with no columns at the ends, and a steel cable ties them together at the top. In 1995 it was declared a National Monument, now a Cultural Heritage Site of the Nation.

Since 2017 it has gone by Arena Cañaveralejo and hosts concerts, festivals and events from January to November. December is still for the bullfighting fair, according to its website. It had a major renovation in 2021.

Since 2025 it has been run by Grupo Páramo and Live Nation, Live Nation's first venue in Colombia. Capacity goes from 1,500 to 15,000 depending on the setup. In 2025 it held 11 events and sold over 81,000 tickets; the 2026 goal was 26 events.

It has booked concerts by Andrés Calamaro, Fonseca and Silvio Rodríguez, plus the Festival Internacional de Salsa. The ring and the stands are open to the sky.
