It opened on July 20, 1937, as the Estadio Departamental, on land owned by the poet Pascual Guerrero, who asked for it to be built. For the 1971 Pan American Games it was rebuilt by engineer Guillermo González Zuleta, who also designed the Cañaveralejo bullring, including the three-level west stand.
It was remodeled again in 2011 for the U-20 World Cup: seats throughout, boxes and the white roof. Today it has 37,899 seats, according to the city. It also hosted the 2001 Copa América and the 2013 World Games, and it has an athletics track.
América de Cali plays its home games here. It also hosts international tournaments and big concerts.
The August 10, 2026, earthquake cracked secondary elements of the west stand, restrooms and boxes, and the stadium was closed. The inspection found no damage to the main structure. It reopened all its gates on October 11, 2026, with the west stand still at partial capacity.
