La Sierra is a neighborhood in Comuna 8, Villa Hermosa, on the mountainside in eastern Medellín. It took shape from the late seventies with families who came from the countryside and built on the slope. Because it sits on the way out toward the east, it was an area disputed by gangs, and in recent years it has changed with parks, schools and transportation: the Ayacucho tram and Metrocable Line H, which ends at Villa Sierra station.
The tour you can book today is run by Tour Urbano de Café. The group meets at San Antonio station, takes the tram about 25 minutes to Oriente and the Metrocable about 15 minutes to Villa Sierra. From there you climb on foot between the houses, about 290 steps, to Casa Finca La Sierra, the farm of a coffee-growing family in the neighborhood.
At the farm the family tells their story, you pick coffee for an hour and see the process all the way to the cup; at the end you drink the coffee you made yourself. It's a neighborhood with far less tourism than Comuna 13, and from the top you see a good part of the city.
