Bocagrande is Cartagena's high-rise neighborhood, on a peninsula between the sea and the bay. The beach runs along Carrera 1.

It doesn't have the turquoise water of Barú or the islands. Its advantage is that it's minutes from the old town and doesn't take a full day.

There are tents, chairs and vendors all along the sand. Late in the afternoon you can watch the sunset behind the towers.

What to see

  • The beach in front of the Bocagrande towers.
  • The sunset over the sea.
  • The El Laguito stretch, at the tip of the peninsula.

Getting there

  • Taxi: about 10 minutes from the historic center.
  • Walking from the old town takes more than half an hour along Avenida Santander.

Tips

  • Ask the price of tents, chairs or massages before accepting.
  • Respect the lifeguard flags when the waves are up.
