When to visit Medellín? What "eternal spring" doesn’t tell you
Medellín isn’t the same all year: when it rains, when it fills up and which month suits you best for what you’re coming to do.
The driest months are December, January and February, and June to September. It rains more from March to May and in October and November, almost always in the afternoon. August is the Feria de las Flores and December is the Christmas lights: those are the busiest months, so book ahead.
They call Medellín the city of eternal spring, and it’s true: the temperature sits between 22 and 24 degrees almost all year, with no real winter or summer. But that doesn’t mean every month is the same. There are months with a downpour every day, months when the city fills up and there’s nowhere to sleep, and quiet months that almost nobody takes advantage of. Choosing well changes your trip.
The rain keeps a calendar
Medellín has two rainy seasons: March to May and October to November. April and May are the wettest months of the year, and people who came then tend to say so in their reviews, so the bad name of those months keeps feeding itself.
The good news is that it almost never rains all day. The usual pattern is a sunny morning and a heavy downpour in the afternoon, the kind that floods a street in an hour and then moves on. If you come in those months, do your outdoor plans early and save the afternoon for museums, cafés or malls. December, January, February and the middle of the year are the driest months.
August: the city fills with flowers, and with people
The Feria de las Flores is Medellín’s biggest celebration. In 2026 it runs from July 31 to August 9, and the last day is the Desfile de Silleteros, when farmers from Santa Elena come down carrying flower arrangements on their backs that weigh more than you’d imagine. There are concerts, stages, horse parades and parades all over the city.
It’s the best time to get to know paisa culture and also the hardest time to find a room. If you come during the Feria, book months ahead and pick a hotel close to where you’ll spend your time: traffic gets heavy those days.

December and January: lights, music and holidays
December is the month when Medellín is most itself. The Christmas lights (alumbrados) go on at the end of November, the city fills with music and paisas who live elsewhere come home. In 2025 the lights were up from November 28 to January 12. January stays busy because of school holidays. They’re dry, happy months, and for that same reason, months to book early.
The months almost nobody takes advantage of
February, most of March and September are quiet months: good weather, fewer people and more availability. June has the Festival Internacional de Tango (in 2026, June 8 to 14) and at the end of July comes Colombiamoda (in 2026, July 28 to 30), which fills the hotels near Plaza Mayor.
Watch out for long holiday weekends (puentes festivos) and for Semana Santa: on those dates a lot of people from Medellín leave the city, and the ones who arrive come from other parts of the country. In 2027 Semana Santa falls on March 25 and 26.
So, when should you go?
- If you want the party: August, with the Feria de las Flores, or December, with the Christmas lights. Book ahead.
- If you want good weather and calm: February, June to September outside the Feria, and the first half of March.
- If you’re coming in April, May, October or November: come anyway, but plan your afternoons indoors.
- If you’re coming for a conference or a concert: check the city’s events calendar before you buy your flight.
