La Tertulia was born on March 9, 1956, in a rented house in the San Antonio neighborhood. In 1968 it moved to its current building, on the bank of the Cali River, at a spot people called the Charco del Burro. It was designed by Manuel Lago and had an open-air theater for 400 people from the start.
The collection has more than 1,500 works, mostly on paper, many of them from the Bienales Americanas de Artes Gráficas held between 1971 and 1987. In 1984 the river flooded and about 40% of those works were lost.
The Cinemateca has operated in the museum since 1975 and requires a separate ticket. It's in El Peñón, a few blocks' walk from El Gato del Río.
